Swallowtail

While at work on afternoon during my bluebird box checks, I happened to spot a butterfly in the meadow.  It looked like it had just emerged from its chrysalis because its wings were still wrinkled and soft.  I have difficult differentiating the two, but I’m fairly certain it’s either a spicebush swallowtail or a black swallowtail.  I know I don’t get to see fresh butterflies in the wild like this, so it was pretty cool for me!DSC_0687

Sapphire Wings

My sister and I visited the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia back in October, and we splurged on the butterfly exhibit passes.  Inside were hundreds of beautiful, tropical butterflies, most of which were much different from the native butterflies I encounter on the job and out and about in the woods.  This Peleides Blue Morpho was just stunning, and enormous, too.  I would say it was at least two of my hands across.  It was a really interesting exhibit, and if it’s still there, I’d recommend checking it out!
